Event Description

What better way to prepare for the holidays than learning how to discover and connect documentation that will reveal your family’s past? November 25th, Weeksville Heritage Center welcomes you to attend Genealogy 101, a virtual workshop led by Jermaine Dennis. A 2020 American Library Association Emerging Leader, Jermaine Dennis was selected by the nation’s largest library professional organization to collaborate with librarians nationwide on a problem-solving project addressing the information needs of American communities. We understand that there are particular barriers to overcoming and discovering one’s family history. Genealogy can be seen as the first step to a healing and reparative practice for African Americans to combat the alienation that Western society has constructed against them. This workshop will explore the resources and techniques needed for participants to discover their family history using documents. Join us as we explore search options, methods, and the types of documents that can be used to uncover information and clues about family ancestry.
