Event Description

Why is reading this book important for understanding the long term challenges that many African Americans experience in the United States? Author Isabel Wilkerson reveals the CASTE system is very much in our American DNA. How many generations will suffer the pain and suffering caused by a terrifying and violent system of core beliefs? Caste is a dark history of the inexhaustible scope of human violence that still infects all Americans, a pandemic just as toxic as COVID. The ramifications of a Caste System are very evident--why else would proponents of slavery have over 200 memorials standing on American soil? Why is Lyndon B Johnson, who signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, the last Democratic candidate for President to win the majority of the white male vote? Does the historical racialized oppression of African Americans depict a system similar to India's Caste system?Join us for a community discussion about Caste over Zoom (link will be sent to registrants the day prior) and in breakout rooms. For meaningful discussion, attendees are required to read the book in order to participate. Isabel Wilkerson is the first African American woman awarded the Pulitzer Prize in journalism.
